What dermal fillers are
Dermal fillers are injectable gels used to restore volume, define structure, and address areas of the face that have hollowed or lost definition over time. The most widely used fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body, which makes them biocompatible and, if needed, reversible.
How they work
Filler is introduced beneath the skin to physically support or restore volume in a targeted area. Depending on the product and placement depth, it can lift, define, hydrate, or smooth. Hyaluronic acid fillers also attract and retain water, which contributes to a fuller, more supple appearance in the treated area.
Areas commonly treated
Fillers are used across a wide range of facial areas including the lips, cheeks, tear troughs, jawline, temples, and nasolabial folds. They are also used on the hands. The choice of product, consistency, and technique varies significantly by area and outcome — this is where the skill of the practitioner matters most.
What to expect
Treatment takes thirty to sixty minutes depending on the areas involved. Some mild swelling or bruising is common, particularly in areas with a denser blood supply such as the lips. Most swelling resolves within a few days, with final results visible at around two weeks. Results typically last nine to eighteen months, though this varies by product and individual metabolism.
Maintaining your results
Touch-up appointments allow your practitioner to maintain volume and address any areas where filler has begun to reabsorb. Over time, many people find they need less product at each visit as the skin retains better structure. If you ever decide to stop, hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
