Laser Tattoo Removal
Ink out, on your own timeline.
APR 20 2026
Overview
Tattoo ink is designed to be permanent. Laser removal is a gradual process that fragments the ink over multiple sessions, allowing the body to clear it naturally. Complete removal is achievable for many tattoos, though results vary based on the ink, the skin, and the individual.
What's going on beneath the skin
Tattoo ink is injected into the deep layers of the dermis, where it sits permanently because the immune system cannot clear particles of that size on its own. The ink is stable by design, which is what makes removal challenging.
Laser tattoo removal works by delivering ultra-short pulses of laser energy directly into the tattooed skin. The energy shatters the ink particles into fragments small enough for the immune system to gradually clear. Each session breaks down another layer of ink, and the body does the rest over the following weeks. Multiple wavelengths target different ink colours, as dark inks absorb a broader range of wavelengths while lighter colours like greens and yellows require more precise targeting. The number of sessions required depends on the ink's depth, density, colour palette, the age of the tattoo, and how efficiently your immune system clears fragmented particles.
Daily & Ongoing Care
At-home care:
- SPF 30 or higher over the treated area once healed. UV exposure can cause pigmentation changes in healing skin.
- Keep the area clean and moisturised during the first week of healing
- Do not pick at any scabbing or blistering. Let it heal naturally.
- Avoid strenuous exercise and heat for 24 to 48 hours post-treatment
Before treatment:
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning in the treatment area for 4 weeks before each session
- Arrive with clean skin, free of creams or products over the tattoo
- Sessions are spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart to allow the body adequate time to clear fragmented ink between treatments

What to expect
During treatment
Numbing cream is applied beforehand, and the area is covered with protective eyewear. The laser handpiece delivers pulses over each part of the tattoo. Most patients feel a snapping or stinging sensation similar to a rubber band against the skin. Sessions run 15 to 45 minutes depending on the tattoo's size.
After treatment
Immediately after, the treated area may appear frosted white, which is a normal reaction that resolves within minutes. Redness, mild swelling, and tingling are common for the first 24 to 48 hours. Mild blistering or scabbing can occur and should be left to heal naturally. Most patients return to normal activities the next day.
Results timeline
Noticeable fading becomes visible after each session as the body clears fragmented ink. The number of sessions required varies widely, from as few as 5 for simple amateur tattoos to 15 or more for dense professional work. Sessions are spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart to allow full clearance between treatments.
