What's happening beneath the skin?

What's happening beneath the skin?

Skin that feels tight, looks dull, or loses its bounce is often telling you something simple: it needs more water. Dehydration is one of the most common and most correctable skin concerns, and it affects all skin types, including oily ones.

Healthy skin holds water in two ways. The deeper dermis relies on hyaluronic acid, a molecule naturally produced by the body that binds water and keeps the skin plump and supported from within. The surface relies on the skin barrier to prevent that water from evaporating before it can be used.

When either system is compromised, the skin loses hydration faster than it can retain it. Dehydrated skin shows as fine surface lines, a dull or uneven complexion, a tight feeling after cleansing, and a texture that looks creased rather than smooth. In oilier skin types, the body may compensate by producing more sebum, which can worsen congestion even as the underlying tissue remains water-depleted.

Causes

Causes

  • Environmental exposure is a significant driver. Wind, sun, heating, air conditioning, and low humidity all draw moisture from the skin surface faster than it can be replenished.
  • Cleansing with products that strip the skin barrier removes the lipids and proteins that hold water in, leaving the skin more vulnerable to transepidermal water loss throughout the day.
  • Diet and systemic hydration levels matter. Insufficient water intake, alcohol, and caffeine all affect how well the skin maintains its moisture balance.
  • Age plays a compounding role. Hyaluronic acid production declines naturally over time, reducing the dermis's capacity to hold water. Barrier function also becomes less efficient, increasing the rate of surface moisture loss.

Daily & Ongoing Care

Daily & Ongoing Care

Hydration management is largely a question of daily habit. The right combination of topical ingredients and consistent barrier care can maintain comfortable, healthy skin between professional treatments.

At home:

  • Hyaluronic acid serums applied to damp skin attract and hold moisture in the surface layers. Look for formulations with multiple molecular weights for penetration at different depths.
  • Ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol in moisturisers repair and reinforce the skin barrier, reducing water loss throughout the day.
  • Niacinamide strengthens the barrier and reduces transepidermal water loss with consistent use.
  • SPF 50 daily. UV radiation degrades the skin barrier and accelerates moisture loss.
  • Avoid over-cleansing or using harsh cleansers that disrupt barrier integrity.

Professional treatments:

  • Skin Boosters such as Juvederm Volite and Restylane Skin Boosters deliver hyaluronic acid directly into the dermis via micro-injection, restoring deep hydration that topical products cannot reach.
  • Profhilo is an injectable treatment that disperses hyaluronic acid across a wide area, hydrating the tissue and stimulating collagen and elastin production simultaneously.
  • HydraFacial combines cleansing, exfoliation, and infusion of hydrating serums in a single session, improving surface hydration and barrier function with no downtime.
  • Medical-grade facials and enzyme treatments support barrier health and improve the skin's ability to retain moisture between clinic visits.
